Insights from Jane Lum

1) On Culture: What’s one thing you or your team does regularly to build a strong, positive workplace culture?

We like to remind each other "to treat others as how we would like to be treated". Long days, tough days do come, and these peer reminders are good wake-ups for all of us in the team.

2) On Impact: What’s one HR initiative you led or supported that made a clear impact on your team or company? What changed because of it?

Due to factors beyond our control, there are times when we had to double up on other HR functions or even to assist in Administration. With our positive outlook, we took the challenge looking towards the learning we will gain taking on the additional responsibilities.

3) On the Future: What’s one key skill or mindset you think every HR professional in Singapore will need in the next 5 years - and why?

Business Insights - HR has evolved from back in the day, behind the desk role to a business partner and in the coming future, we will be business leaders too. Business insights will allow our talent structural projects to spear towards the business needs both, current or otherwise.

4) What’s one HR initiative or practice you believe more companies should adopt to build stronger teams or workplaces — and why?

DEI - We will gain much more if we are open to more people from different background and cultures.

5) What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting their career in HR or people leadership?

Set up a strong solid base of experience and knowledge before you step up to the higher roles of authority in HR. I see many new HR leaders having the knowledge through hard work in studying but lacking the life understanding to executive the empathy part of HR.

6) What’s one workplace trend you’re excited about — and one you’re cautious of?

One work place Trend- HR Data Analytics exciting yet cautious, more data means more truths to find solutions for the new challenges.
