Insights from Michelle Pung
1) On Culture: What’s one thing you or your team does regularly to build a strong, positive workplace culture?
One thing I’ve come to appreciate recently, both through conversations with my teammates and insights from our pulse survey, is the importance of recognition in building a positive workplace culture. Creating a habit of giving positive feedback not only boosts morale but also helps strengthen team dynamics and trust.
To support this, during our bi-weekly sync ups, my team will share highlights and acknowledge each other’s contributions. To us, it’s a small gesture that goes a long way!
2) On Impact: What’s one HR initiative you led or supported that made a clear impact on your team or company? What changed because of it?
I’m proud to have helped launch our branded annual recognition program to spotlight top performers more visibly. My team and I built it from scratch, from designing the structure, managing nominations, to ultimately flying winners to our leadership offsite to receive awards from senior leaders. Before this, recognition wasn’t widely known, but after the first edition, awareness and motivation grew significantly. The program boosted performance and helped foster a stronger culture of appreciation across the company.
3) On the Future: What’s one key skill or mindset you think every HR professional in Singapore will need in the next 5 years - and why?
For me personally, one key mindset is adaptability and resilience. The workplace is changing rapidly, with evolving employee expectations, new ways of working, and ongoing disruptions. We must be able to navigate uncertainty, embrace change quickly, and help organisations and people do the same. Being adaptable means staying curious, continuously learning, and finding creative solutions to emerging challenges. Resilience helps sustain that energy and positivity even when facing setbacks. Together, these qualities will enable us to lead with agility and foster a culture that thrives in change.
4) What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting their career in HR or people leadership?
As someone who’s still very early in my HR journey, one piece of advice I would give is to stay curious and be open to learning from everyone around you, whether it’s your peers, business leaders, or employees on the ground.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, try new things, and take on projects outside your comfort zone. Every experience, big or small, helps build your confidence and understanding of how to create impact!
