Insights from Siu Ming (Cen) Hong

1) On Culture: What’s one thing you or your team does regularly to build a strong, positive workplace culture?

In the grand scheme of things, I see ourselves as architects and designers who create vibrant environments for people to thrive in. Hence, the starting point for everything that we do starts with this design intent. When that happens, more often that not, outcomes will be oriented towards that common objective.

2) On Impact: What’s one HR initiative you led or supported that made a clear impact on your team or company? What changed because of it?

I am a Firm believer that organizations should not chase after “best practice”, but instead go for “best fit”. This means that we should understand organizational needs and outcomes we would like to achieve, and adapt “best practices to fit with the design intent and outcomes that are relevant for the organization”. In 2013, leaning on an organizational need to drive greater empowerment and support to employees for their well-being while anchoring this to the organization’s brand proposition, my team and I developed and implemented a unique integrated employee health incentive benefits programme which was first to market in Asia that aligned employees interests to the corporate brand proposition. The programme saw participation consistently at above 80% consistently over the past decade and has played a significant role in driving employee engagement.

3) On the Future: What’s one key skill or mindset you think every HR professional in Singapore will need in the next 5 years - and why?

Learning agility is a key trait that all HR professionals should acquire sooner rather than later. As the world becomes increasingly uncertain and evolves at great pace, greenfield challenges and situations will arise which will require new ways of thinking and solutioning. Hence, the ability to quickly acquire new skills, adjust to change and find solutions in complex and evolving environments is crucial.
